This month's topic is: Powering Up: Science & Code of Lithium-ion Batteries in Buildings

  • This session explores the science behind lithium-ion battery hazards — from how thermal runaway works to its real-world impacts — and walks through the evolving International Fire Code requirements for battery energy storage systems and battery storage in buildings. Attendees will also learn UL9540A testing, which provides the fundamental knowledge about the battery fire safety behaviors.

    • Learning Objectives:

      1. Understand the science and impact of lithium-ion battery thermal runaway — including the trigger categories, stages of progression, and the fire, explosion, toxic gas, and smoke hazards relevant to building environments.
      2. Navigate the evolving IFC requirements for lithium-ion batteries in buildings — including the distinction between battery energy storage systems (BESS) and battery storage, key code milestones from 2015 through the upcoming 2026 IFC, and how to evaluate HMA and UL 9540A reports.
      3. Clarify common misconceptions — including applicability of requirements of hazardous materials and waste disposal.
